Hotel Lake Brunner, built in the 1930’s with local timber to service the TranzAlpine Rail service, connecting the East Coast with the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand.
The Hotel once called the Chateau Moana provides a warm and friendly environment for travellers and locals to share news and stories.
The name Brunner was bestowed on the lake, to recognise the explorer and surveyor Thomas Brunner, who with the help of his Maori guide Kehu, late in January 1848 was likely the first European to see this supreme rain forest lake. The lake, Moana Kotuku Whakaoho, was already a significant area to local Iwi, providing year round Kai (food) on their journey across the Southern Alps via the Taramakau Valley and onto the East Coast trading their sacred Pounamu stone.
Our friendly team at the Kingfisher want you to enjoy a memorable occasion at our Hotel.
